Union Communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday said the government will launch 'Next Generation Network' in major cities of Maharashtra during the next financial year.
The next-gen network is aimed at better quality broadband connectivity.
"In fiscal 2016-17, we will have 4 lakh connections in Maharashtra under 'Next Generation Network' (NGN)," Prasad said.
According to the minister, the network would be implemented in Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Kalyan and Nanded in financial year 2016-17.
Besides, Prasad said that as many as 174 wi-fi hot-spots would be set up across 58 cities in Maharashtra.
Further, the minister said that a "new prepaid mobile intelligence network would be set up in Pune to give newer services to prepaid customers".
