Salgaocar Football Club managed
to register a hard-fought
2-1 win over Velsao Sports
and Cultural Club in the Goa
Professional League at Duler
Stadium here on Tuesday.
After today’s win, the Green
Brigade have ten points while
a struggling Velsao SCC have
just a point from five matches.
Salgaocar went into the
breather with two goals cushion
with the help of an own
goal by Krishna Pandit and
Devendra Murgaonkar netting
the second goal. Veegan
Ferrao scored from the spot
to reduce the margin for the
newly promoted side Velsao.
It was some brilliant keeping
by U-20 Velsao keeper Preston
Rego that managed to keep
the scoreline respectable.
In the 3rd minute, striker
Ronaldo Oliveira sent a blistering
strike from the top of the
box but Velsao keeper Preston
Rego managed to parry it for
a corner. Later in the match,
Sanson tried to find Ronaldo
inside the penalty box with a
fine low cross, but Velsao custodian
Rego brought off a diving
collection.
Salgaocar surged ahead in
the 18th minute as a corner
by Sanson Pereira saw Velsao
defender Krishna Shirodkar’s
header in his attempt to clear,
enter his own goal.
Velsao had just one good
attempt to net the equaliser
when their striker and skipper
Joseph Pereira danced past a
host of Salgaocar’s defenders
and drilled a fierce shot from
the top of the box which was
was however pushed for safety
by keeper S. Rajini Kumar
with a full-stretched diving
save.
At the other end, Velsao
keeper Rego brought another
smart save to deny U-20 winger
Komarpant from scoring.
In the 42nd minute, Salgaocar
extended their lead. Devendra
Murgaonkar made his
way past Velsao’s last line of
defence and shot from the top
of the box into the back of the
nylons. On crossing over, Salgaocar
time and again attacked
the rival citadel but failed to
further increase the lead.
In the 63rd minute, Samuel
Costa found Ronaldo inside
the penalty box but the latter
failed keep his strike on target
with just Velsao keeper
Rego at his mercy. In the last
quarter of the match, both
the teams were awarded a
penlaty each.
Velsao defender Krishna
was caught in the act of bringing
down Devendra inside
the danger zone, prompting
the referee to point to the
penalty spot, but Sanson’s
kick from the spot, was brilliantly
paired away by Velsao
keeper Rego.
At the other end Velsao
were awarded a penalty when
Myron’s shot from the top of
the box was handled by Devendra
in the box and Veegan
made no mistake in scoring to
make it 1-2.
