Dumping of junk vehicles alongside the main road close to the multipurpose education complex at Borda has kicked up a row of sorts, with the vehicles not only turning out to be a nuisance to the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), but an eyesore to the public in general.

The issue also brought face to face the local civic body and the authorities over the absence of space to dump old and unused vehicles and the question whether the authorities can just abandon such vehicles at public places.

While residents, including Camilo Barretto and Durgadas Prabhu, both who had unsuccessfully contested the recently held municipal poll, cried foul over the dumping of the junk close to the educational complex, the MMC complained bitterly to the district collector and the traffic police for leaving the vehicles along the roadside, obstructing the ongoing work of an enclosure for garbage bins.

The incident is believed to have occurred after the local police got the vehicles removed from a housing colony upon orders of the district authorities and left them along the Borda roadside without permission from the civic body. What has given an added twist to the row is the fact that when the municipal body has asked the authorities to get the junk out from the roadside, the authorities are believed to have got back to the civic body demanding to know whether the municipality has made any provision to accommodate junk and worn out vehicles.

A visibly agitated MMC chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudessai wondered how the authorities can question the civic body when they have in the first place dumped the junk sans permission from the municipality. “In the first place, the authorities cannot dump the junk in public places and without permission from the local civic body. And, now they raise the question whether the civic body has allocated any space to accommodate such vehicles," Babita said even as locals from Borda have demanded the immediate lifting of the junk from the locality.
