People have rightly said that food safety is a critical concern in India. The reason for the recent nationwide crackdown on food and drug adulteration is clear. This is not a new issue. After a few raids and inspections, the situation often returns to square one. However, the action taken by Tukaram Mundhe appears to be systematic. The question is whether it will lead to lasting change.
The fact that multiple food establishments — from roadside eateries serving the common man to five-star hotels and high-end clubs — have been found violating food safety norms clearly suggests that successive FDA commissioners may have failed to adequately discharge their responsibilities, perhaps due to various constraints. This has potentially put people’s lives at risk.
Many people who have worked with Mundhe previously and know him personally say that he will not back down. My only apprehension is how long he will be able to continue in the same post before being transferred to yet another position, as has happened to him multiple times during his career.
I hope and pray that more officers like Tukaram Mundhe follow his example. Tackling such a widespread problem single-handedly is extremely difficult. Sustained institutional support and collective action will be necessary to bring about lasting change.
