An apple a day...

Ryan Fernando, a leading nutritionist educates us about the dos and don’ts that have to be followed, in order to lead a healthy life

An apple a day...

“I have set a goal or mission for myself. What is it, youask? To change the way you eat. In Latin, the word ‘qua’ means, ‘in thecapacity of’. Helping yourself to discovery your ‘qua’, is one of the mostimportant discoveries when it comes to eating healthy. My honest advice toeveryone is to discover their own capacity via nutritional counselling andstick to it,” says Ryan Fernando, one of India's leading nutritionists.

A celebrity sports nutritionist by profession, RyanFernando’s clients include Guinness world record holders in human endurance,Olympic medal winner Sushil Kumar, cricketer Robin Uthappa, film stars and ahost of other athletes. In Goa for a one day personalised workshop at CarpeDiem in Majorda, the man known for his approach on ‘eating right’, advocatedhis policies on the maintenance of a healthier lifestyle through the path ofgood nutrition. Doubling up as a sports nutritionist, he doles out frank adviceto people looking to mould their appearance, and more importantly, theirlifestyles.

“I sometimes wonder how we push the boundaries ofperformance, whether in an athlete or a normal person. Professionally, I do notdifferentiate between my client Sushil Kumar, and a software engineer who wantsa six pack. The differences merely arise when we work with blood testing, biomedical parameters and the supplements that are required (and differ foreach person) to get the desired result,” he adds.

He believes that the need for medical research andindividual case study is just as important as getting the fundamentals right. When asked what these fundamentals are, he adds, “Eating right, of course.Nothing beats getting the right amount of food and the right quality of foodinto the system. These include the right amount of all the necessary foodgroups, ideally coupled with an oil free diet. A little spritz of oil is best, especially through a spray bottle. And please, I beg of you, do not EVER re-useoil.”

With the belief that his techniques and concepts that aredirected at eating nutritiously for fat loss, can help with maintaininghealthier weight and beating the bulge, he signs off by saying, “I believe thatmy techniques can help everyone. I promised Olympic medals to the Indian teamand Guinness world record holders. I think I can help everyone achieve theirgoals.”
