Allegations that the flyover project near Dabolim Airport would lead to the airport's closure have been firmly dismissed, with Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho confirming that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Indian Navy have amicably resolved the "Obstacle Limitation Surface" (OLS) issue.
Speaking to reporters, Godinho said the Navy had informed the NHAI that around 17 columns of the flyover were infringing upon the OLS limits. “The High Court had directed that the NHAI and the Airport Authority of India discuss the matter with the Navy to find a solution. Top officials from both sides met, and the issue was resolved. The Navy granted the NOC on April 16,” he said.
He added that 17 pillars will now be lowered in height, allowing construction to continue without hindrance. “I thank the NHAI and Navy officials for resolving the standoff amicably. With this change, not only is the safety issue addressed, but the cost of the project is also reduced — a win-win for everyone,” Godinho noted.
He further said the meeting also resolved a land issue for the flyover. “The Navy convinced the NHAI that the land required should be taken from the state government side, given their role as a defence establishment,” he said.
Hitting out at critics, Godinho said, “Some activist-turned-politicians tried to spread negative propaganda, falsely claiming that the government intended to shut down Dabolim Airport by deliberately increasing the height of the flyover. These baseless claims were politically motivated.”
“Dabolim Airport is doing exceptionally well. Flight arrivals and departures have almost doubled compared to Mopa. It is centrally located and easily accessible, even from Panjim thanks to the new Zuari Bridge. There is no question of shutting it down,” he asserted.
“People should not fall prey to negativity. National projects like this are for the benefit of the public, and we must not let those with a negative mindset mislead us,” Godinho concluded.
