In a sweeping action against illegal constructions, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has issued 262 notices to houses and establishments across its jurisdiction, following directives from the Bombay High Court at Goa.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Girish Borker said the notices were part of a court-mandated effort to identify and verify roadside encroachments. “As per the circular, properties or encroachments along highways or internal roads need to be checked. We have asked our staff to issue notices and verify their legal status,” he said.
Borker informed that over 260 notices have already been served, asking occupants to submit their relevant documents. “When it comes to High Court orders, the MMC has no option but to comply and provide the court with necessary details,” he added.
He further stated that hearings are likely to begin next month. “We will examine whether the parties had applied for or obtained valid approvals and licences at the time of construction. Depending on that, the court will decide the final legal status of these properties,” Borker explained.
“The exercise is not limited to the current 262 cases. We may issue notices to many more houses as we continue to check for documents and approvals,” he said, urging residents to cooperate by submitting the required paperwork to the MMC Chief Officer.
