The Igreja do Salvador do Mundo was built in Loutolim tolook after the spiritual needs of the catholic population of the village afterthey converted from their original Hindu beliefs. Unlike many towns in Salcetteand Bardez, where churches were built over demolished temples, in Loutolim, theplot of land where the old Ramnathi temple stood remained vacant due to someopposition amongst the Lotlikars.
The church is one of the best preserved Jesuit churches ofthe late sixteenth century in Salcete and from an architectural point of view,is very close to its prototype, the church of Rachol. The facade, veryelaborate and complex, corresponds to profound architectural changes introducedin the nineteenth century. In terms of size the church is similar to those thatare seen in Old Goa or Rachol, that is to say, it is as wide as it is high andhas especially notable exterior elevations west and the south. This design planof the church by and large is the same as is seen in its counterpart at Rachol.Everything that is considered paramount to the structure of the church has beencarefully plastered and whitewashed. Iftravelling from Margao, one first passes along the side facade of the church.The village spreads to the east and south sides of the church, along the roadand up the slope.
