Born and brought up in Gaunsawaddo, Siolim, Raghuvir Charyis a mechanical engineer and professor that has surpassed all expectations thatmay have been resting on his shoulders. “In our community, we are mainlyexpected to work with intricate and artistic design. I hope I have done themproud,” he says humbly, with reference to his invention.
While waiting for confirmation from the Indian patentoffice, the lecturer at the Government Polytechnic at Altinho, has received aplaudits for an invention titled 'Chary’s Anglometer’, an angle measuring devicefor measuring angles, 0 through 360, between any two surfaces, lines orobjects.
Aged 45, Chary says, “This invention is adapted to theprecise measurement of an angle in any plane. I have designed it to aid theengineering community at measuring over large distances. It can resolution of0.1 arcsecond, by mechanical means. I have stated this on the patentdescription of the device as well.”
Having first applied for the patent in 2007, Chary claimedthe application underwent thorough scrutiny as part of a lengthy process beforeit was granted. “I am still waiting for confirmation of the patent. I hope itcomes through in my favour, as it provides direct reading of angles and iseconomical as compared to current imported alternatives.”
Chary highlights his financial uphill climb, as theinvention had cost him a sum total of approximately 1 lakh inclusive ofpatenting fees, which includes a patent for two variants of his device. “I havedeveloped two versions of my invention- a quadrant type for general purposesand a lighter theodolite type for navigational and other precise applications.”
Chary said he had entered his invention for somecompetitions and was also looking out for manufacturers to commerciallymanufacture his invention. “The needs of the community need to be addressedhere. We, as engineers can make use of something that is this pertinent toaccurate measurement. It would be beneficial all-round if this entiredevelopment process from start to finish were to work in my favour,” he says.
