MAPUSA
After maintaining a low profile on Friday, monsoon hit with all its fury on Saturday inundating parts of Mapusa market and inconveniencing motorists.
Since early morning the city and surrounding villages of Bardez received heavy showers with complains of tree
falls reported from several places.
Mapusa fire station received a total of 23 calls of tree falling including compound wall collapse from, Anjuna, Colvale, Bastora, Canca and Parra.
For a change, except for a couple of places, Mapusa did not see much of water logging due to the heavy downpour.
Parts of Mapusa market were, however, flooded and water entered in some shops.
The Dangui Optician and Café Corner lanes and the flower market area were inundated inconveniencing people and shopkeepers.
A lot of people who came to shop in the market had to walk through stagnant water.
“Except for a few lanes there was no major water logging incidents as such so far,” said Ashish Shirodkar, President of Mapusa Merchants Association.
“It wasn’t pouring continuous. We are yet to see the fury of the monsoon. So that way we cannot make a proper assessment,” he added.
Mapusa witnessed a wet spell in the first half of the day with the rains taking a breather in the evening half.
