Last week’s Seraulim Gram Sabha once again reacted to TheGoan’s story on the garbage that is being brought into the village bycontractors from some 5 star hotels. The garbage contractors and the menacecaused by their garbage dominated the gram sabha meet. Seraulim resident Dominic Fernandes raisedconcerns of the garbage contractors, as the Sarpanch Sebastian Noronha, HealthAuthroities and the Pollution Control Board are not acting on the variouscomplaints received by them.
Members emphasised the need of taking action in this matteras a case of dengue fever was reported in the vicinity of area where this hotelgarbage is being illegally handled. The sarpanch responded by saying that thePanchayat has already served Stop Notices to these contractors. Panch memberElvis Coutinho stated that the Panchayat has only served notices to stoppiggeries in this thickly populated area, instead of stopping the activity ofgarbage handling and sorting, which means that the villagers battle is onlyhalf fought.
Earlier in July, when The Goan raised the issue of numerousmega-projects mushrooming in Seraulim, the very next day the mega-project woescaused a major ruckus while two citizens got into a fist fight and violencespread at the gram sabha. The Goan has continuously reported the problems ofSeraulim residents.
