With the ever-increasing number of vehicles proceeding on Goan roads, parking has become a matter of grave concern not only in major cities and towns, but also in villages. In Ponda, haphazard parking has become the order of the day in different locations. Not only two-wheelers, but even private cars are halted and even parked on the road.
Under such circumstances, smooth movement of vehicular traffic becomes a difficult task. Although parking areas for two wheelers and cars are clearly marked by the traffic cell department, still vehicles are parked as per whims and fancies. At times, two-wheelers are parked in areas marked for four-wheelers and vice versa.
Similarly, cars are parked behind the already parked two-wheelers. In the process, a two-wheeler rider is unable to remove his vehicle as the driver of the parked car is nowhere to be seen. Precious time is therefore wasted. Further, it is a fact that traffic signboards indicating ‘No Parking' at the concerned spots are being over-looked.
A perfect example in this regard is the area adjacent to Almeida High School in the vicinity of old bus-stand where two-wheelers are often seen parked very close to ‘No Parking' signboards.
It is pity that the concerned authorities do not deal firmly with the offenders. Hence parking of the vehicle on road tends to be a regular phenomenon. Even at the turn near municipal garden, vehicles are regularly parked in ‘No Parking' area.
Unless the concerned authorities adopt open spaces for parking purpose at different spots, unwarranted parking would be the order of the day. It is time for the officials of the Road Transport Office (RTO), Traffic Cell department and the Ponda Municipal Council arrange a joint meeting to chalk out elaborate steps to assure disciplined parking at this particular jurisdiction.
Persons parking vehicles on the road should be fined accordingly without any discrimination.
