The murder of a 19-year-old student allegedly by the son of a JD(U) MLC in Gaya, Bihar is a shocking reminder of the law and order problem that still prevails in this state despite the best efforts of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The shooting apparently took place after the student, driving a Swift Dzire overtook the Range Rover, a much larger car, driven by Rocky Yadav. An altercation followed in which Rocky allegedly shot the student. An incident as bizarre as this can only take place if the attacker is demented or is sure that he can get away with any sort of behavior. In Rocky s case it was the latter. What is even more disturbing it that the shooting took place in the presence of cops who were acting as bodyguards to Rocky. Surely, one of them could have intervened. Or did they relish the chase and the shooting? Kumar has promised a thorough inquiry and assured that no one would be shielded, but there is a growing feeling that the situation is getting out of hand. It is a reminder that the law and order issue is unfinished business and Kumar might have to start with cleansing his party before cleaning up Bihar.
