Braking ‘Dhoom

Government's plan to introduce an over-speeding warning system with beeps or continuous alarms in all cars is set to take driving to a new level. The over-speeding warning system, which will be mandatory, is expected to alert the driver with beeps once the vehicle crosses the speed of 80 km. Subsequently if the speed crosses 90 km, there would be continuous special beeps so that both driver and co-passengers are warned. It would be interesting to know how the mechanism would identify and readjust itself when driving on an expressway where speeds vary from over 100 kmph. The question would be how the system will adapt to the change in terrain. The government also plans to install cameras to check over-speeding, besides making airbags in cars mandatory. However, the question again would be, will these cameras be able to monitor speed of the moving vehicles. How would one judge the speed of vehicles merely looking at a video footage. Government move sounds positive given the fact that over-speeding is the ‘killer' cause of road accidents. However, the mechanisms need to be full proof, not fool proof.
