As almost one and a half lakh students were conferred with degrees by Mumbai University a few days ago, human endeavour won out. Saugata Hazra completed his master’s degree in law. Hazra is a 27 year old man who lives with cerebral palsy. Kokila Shah was diagnosed with overian cancer in the late 1990s, which she overcame and then began to study philosophy. She was conferred a PhD in Vedanta philosophy, along with many other senior citizens including Arun Kshirsagar, who with a PhD in microfinance at 70 plans to train poor women in new occupations. What is also interesting is that out of the near 1.5 lakh students, a little over 82, 000 were women, far
more than the graduating men.
These are just some of the examples of human endeavour
that stand out from the crowd, and is a testament to the
fact that it is never too late to follow your dreams or fulfill a
wish. There are many out there who sacrifice careers and
dreams to become parents or dutiful children who take care
of their parents. Incidents and stories like Hazra’s, Shah’s and
Kshirsagar’s prove that the curtain never really comes down
on life as long as you have a say in it.
