There are those people who drive forward, ignoring negativity around them and doing their part for the world. One must commend the residents of Kamat Estate in Tonca for their part in helping out the environment and turning wet waste into compost. The compost is then either sold or used in the neighbourhood garden which grows fruit and vegetables. A few years ago, a society in Porvorim, Pundalik Nagar, too collected and segregated waste, also turning their wet waste into compost. Perhaps there are many more ardent greens like them who strive to help out.
Goa generates hundreds of tonnes of garbage daily and the crisis is severe. For places like Panaji that doesn't have a landfill to dump garbage, this little experiment by Kamat Estate is just one step forward in easing the pressure on civic authorities. If one goes by their example, if every building or waddo, or clusters of them, worked on their own garbage management then it would surely drastically reduce the amount of waste generated in Goa. Composting would also help keep the soil fertile. It makes sense to go organic, given that other countries are adopting what we in India have been doing for centuries.
A green revolution is needed and this time it's apt that we stop pointing fingers at civic authorities of the government and get proactive. This revolution, like charity, should start at home
