The first debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump seems to have gone the former’s way. A snap poll conducted by CNN of 521 voters showed that 62 percent thought Hillary had won it. Her performance was measured. What she succeeded in showcasing was her experience in politics and government and depth in policy. She doesn’t have the charisma of her husband or President Barack Obama, but she certainly has her finger on what needs to be done. Trump did not fare as badly as most expected him to do. He had a few answers to some difficult questions and tried to keep the focus on jobs, outsourcing and stamina for the job. But on policy matters he appeared to less at home than her. The general consensus was that Hillary Clinton is more prepared to be president than Trump and though some experts opined that the debate would give her a two to four per cent bump in her ratings, the fact is that Trump has been narrowing the difference. Clearly, this election is not over.
