Raising age limits
The state government has decided to increase the maximum recruitment age in government service to 45 from the existing 40. It seems this decision has been taken by the council of ministers at the recent cabinet meeting keeping in view the high unemployment rate. This is indeed an appropriate decision and will help aspirants wishing to seek government jobs. However it is rather disturbing to note that selection of candidates for government jobs is not being executed on the basis of merit. Prior to publication of advertisements regarding vacancies in local dailies, it is a general practice for the concerned ministers to prepare a list of candidates of their choice. This only implies that influence is involved in this task. Under such circumstances, aspirants with higher qualification, working experience, better efficiency and knowledge of the said work ultimately remains aside. In practice it is required that these type of candidates are selected for the concerned posts. But the reality is quite different. Efficient candidates should not face any discrimination but must get justice at all costs. In case this is achieved, public at large visiting government departments for their official work would indeed receive better service on a permanent basis.

No divisions
The recent agitation by both MRS and BBMS for Marathi and against the grant to English medium schools is nothing but a cover for communalism. We lived for 450 years in harmony; Christian, Muslims and Hindus without any differences and without any hate. We all fought equally for Independence and got it. The Indian state was declared a secular state and the Constitution was laid down for us all to follow it. Konkani has been declared as state language. Marathi is official language of Maharashtra. In which state are two languages are used in administration? State administration is run on the English language so also the county’s administration, so why this fight? Hate and grudges will destroy the peace of the people and the whole community. After independent we faced a constant Hindu-Muslim fight where so many lives were lost. Do we want the same to happen again?

No future in Goa
Sudin Dhavalikar wants the Portuguese Consulate to be moved to Delhi, because he says that lakhs of Goans are moving to Portugal. But this is just a smokescreen. Goans aren’t moving to Portugal and elsewhere on Portuguese passports because it is easy to travel to the Portuguese consulate in Altinho. We can fly to Delhi in two hours. People are moving out of Goa and to other countries because, just like Sudin Dhavalikar, successive governments have failed to recognize the real problem in Goa. There is bad governance, there are no jobs and the politicians and many others are only interested in filling up their own coffers. If our industries were stable and constantly providing employment, if the government was finding other industries to create revenue after the mining shutdown robbed our economy of 50 percent revenue, then our children and our friends would be staying here and not looking to UAE, Europe or Australia and Canada. Our ministers need to talk sense.
