Three tourists drown off Calangute, two missing

Navy, Coast Guard pressed into rescue operation

An early Monday morning rush into the sea turned into a tragedy for a group of 14 tourists, as three of them drowned while two others went missing off Calangute beach.   

The two missing persons have been identified as Kiran Mhake and Shubham Vaidya, even as police and lifeguards were carrying out search operations to trace the duo. Later, the navy and coastguard also joined in the rescue operation.   

Two of the deceased were brothers, one of whom, Pritesh Gawali (32) was a police constable and Chetan Gawali (27) was a student, while the third, Ujwal Vakode (25), was employed as a mechanic.
