Bent out of proportion
People keep going on about the Yoga-Hindu connection, including Praveen Togadia, but what many have failed to realise is that Yoga predates 'Hinduism'. It was practiced during the Indus Valley Civilisation too. That makes it Indian, but not Hindu. Perhaps there are those who need to do their homework before making statements that clearly show a lack of background checks. Also, there are people dying from flooded streets and homes in Mumbai, from the cold (during the winter) in Delhi and so many other situations in India. Then, why are we spending crores of rupees on Yoga Day? To prove a point to the world? We need good governance that no can fix.

Breeding disease
The Vasco fish market is a mess. For that matter, most markets in Goa are a mess, but the Vasco fish market is another thing altogether. There is garbage everywhere. It stinks with the rotten remains of fish, strewn all over the place. New Vaddem has already recorded a case of dengue fever. How long before more disease spreads through the streets of the port town? We have our councillors playing musical chairs, our elected representatives more bothered about their upcoming elections. But, what about the people who voted them to power? They need to get their act together.

Should Churchill retire?
The Vasco strongman always gets in the new now and then, despite him being out of power and out of favour, except in his little South Goa village and parts of Navelim. But, will that be enough to bring him to power again? I think Churchill now is pale comparison to the Churchill of the past. He doesn't have the wherewithal to govern anymore, since he's more concerned with cospirency theories than about actually doing something worthwhile. Goa needs fresh and young minds, who actually want to serve the polity, not take advantage of them. Even in Vasco now, there are people who desire serious change.

Baga is a mess
Whatever happened to Baga? It was the party capital of Goa, but the fun was clean. Now you have drunkards on the roads, accompanied by transvestites, prostitutes, drug dealers and kids who think their papa can bail them out of whatever trouble they get into. Baga reminds me of a city fete, minus the decency. I went there after being away from the state for three years and things have changed for the worse. I totally get what the residents of Calangute-Baga are saying when they talk about the corruption of their village the degradation of society there. It's a real mess but no one seems to be doing anything worthwhile. Even those old school establishments on the stretch have lost their charm due to the riff-raff - local and national - that accumulates there. This is not what Goan tourism should be like.
