A sizeable number of migrant population visits the state of Goa on a regular basis for seeking employment of various sorts. Most of them seek jobs in construction/fabrication firms. With no sort of accommodation at their workplace, most of them are compelled to secure hired rooms near the concerned locality, depending on their budget.
However in most of the cases, they do not get toilet facilities at the hired rooms and are therefore compelled to urinate and also defecate in open areas - defecation is done either near the sea or at the nearby hills.
Such a undesirable practice is extremely unhygienic and unfortunately very common in the villages. It is absolutely necessary that house owners renting their rooms to migrants provide them with a toilet facility so that open defecation does not happen.
The recent intention of the state government to conduct a survey for collecting data regarding availability of toilet facilities in panchayat areas seems to be a worthy move.
Alongwith the toilet facilities to be provided at the respective houses, it is equally important that the village panchayats construct sulabh sauchalyas (public toilets) at strategic locations within each of their respective jurisdictions for the benefit of the public at large.
Such a timely step would ultimately go a long way in discouraging open defecation, thereby enabling the state of Goa to achieve the objective of Swachcha Bharat Abhiyaan.
Maintaining hygienic conditions has become the need of the hour and this can be a reality with the wholehearted co-operation of one and all.
