Even before the Sheena Bora case was handed to the Central Bureau of Investigations, it was assumed that all the pieces of the puzzle were in place. That was until the CBI sprang a surprise and arrested Peter Mukerjea. It is now believed that Peter was aware of of his wife Indrani's plot to murder her own daughter and even called her on the day it was committed and while it was in progress. These details are not only shocking but also chilling because they point to a larger conspiracy.
While Indrani's past was mired in controversy and secrecy, Peter's was quite straight forward. Besides, he is a respected face and voice in the television industry and was the man who put Star TV on a firm footing in India. He was more than just a bystander and the Maharashtra government's decision to hand over the case to the CBI now seems justified. Two of the biggest mistakes committed by the police was not to take the missing report filed by Peter in 2012 seriously and not acting after the discovery of Sheena's body.
On the other hand, the investigation into the case have shown that if given a free hand the CBI can take a probe to its logical conclusion. They deserve our praise and the Centre must do more to insulate this investigating division from political interference.
