Most of the blind population in India comes from rural areas and they belong to the socio-economically backward group of society.
As a majority are rural poor and illiterate, many of the causes of blindness can be attributed to malnutrition, wrong treatment, ignorance of eye care, health, hygiene and lack of
education.
In the old system, schooling was not given much importance and it was not considered necessary for vocational learning.
However most of the vocational trades required elementary mathematics and some reading and writing. Often educational preparation helps the children to do better in vocations that they choose to pursue later in life.
Since the nature of handicap varies from individual to individual, it becomes difficult for the parents of the disabled child to decide whether a normal education pattern will help the child to progress in life or in their vocational training.
Vocational education is necessary for all children as it develops co-ordination of hand, mind and body. They develop the concentration of mind but lack of concentration results in the high rate of school drop-outs.
This type of education also minimises labour and wastage of materials, and puts an end to laziness and carelessness as they learn to take care of their tools and equipments and develop efficiency in their performance.
It also prepares the ground for good responsible citizenship.
Besides this, vocational training gives them satisfaction and pride in their achievements and they work hard for more success. So to change this entire scenario, individual
capabilities or potentials mentioned above should be enhanced and
developed.
According to me, the education which we impart to the differently-abled should be such that the quality of their life is changed.
Now of course vocational education, inclusive education, distance education aims at developing an individual. The whole purpose is now needed to make a disabled person a productive member of society. We can do that now. How? By giving him a decent standard of living, freedom, self esteem and respect from others.
Vocational education gives assurance to a disabled person, he can easily get opportunities and he can become self employed for example he can think of possessing his own garage, computer training institute etc.
Vocational education and training is a motivational factor which helps them try harder and strive for success and a better life.
They also learn the value of money earned through hard work. They learn the habit of saving money wisely and not wasting it.
Vocational training and education is the foundation on which all educational and rehabilitation programmes are based.
Productive work or vocational education frees a person from inferiority complexes of any kind.
He/she develops the feeling of being a responsible member and feels he is no more a burden on the society, while also giving him the sense that he/she is able to pay back whatever his/her parents and society has given back to him/her.

As a result, most of our youth prefer to remain unemployed till they get these jobs.

When the world is progressing or growing, global corporates and business houses also want to expand opportunities.
We see students are aspired in different vocations so the institutions which have their own workshops must visit these corporates and business houses and see which subjects and machinery they could incorporate like computer science and
different softwares like Jaws, NVDA and others aids and appliances which can help the differently-abled secure a good job and help them work efficiently.
