Dozens of Goans hailing from Assolna met at the Shoreham by Sea near Brighton for their annual get-together organised by the Assolna Goans UK on July 22.
They came from Wembley, Southall, Hounslow, Greenford and Swindon to participate in the event.
“We got a great opportunity to bring all Assolnakars together by organising a get-together by the seaside. The day was memorable, with 74 friends and neighbours getting reunited. It was such a joy to see them happy,” said Betty Rodrigues, the main coordinator at the event and member of Assolna Goans UK.
Rodrigues said the day started bright and early with everyone enthusiastically piling into the buses.
“During the long bus journey, tea and snacks were served and singing of Goan Mandos brought the bus to life. When we reached the site, much to our surprise, we were greeted with strong wind and showers but that didn’t stop us from having a blast. We had our backup plan ready, tents packed were opened and we settled down for a welcome drink.”
“We were excited to go for a swim in the sea but unfortunately could not be due to high tides. Instead, we stayed in the tents playing games and dancing, a few enjoying the rain dance. Everyone was highly spirited and charged to have a fun-filled day, which included youngsters and elders.”
For lunch, there was a feast served up comprising all Goan mother’s recipes like chicken curry, prawn curry, vegetarian curry, rice, fried fish, fried prawns, Mol, dry fish Miskut, biryani, cutlets, Chourico Pao, fruits and other treats. The prayers and Grace before meals were done by former Assolna sarpanch Maggie Dias.
Music at the event was provided by Miltonio. After the meal, some headed back into the coach for hot tea. The Assolnakars then proceeded to take group pictures and connected with friends.
“The get-together was lots of fun and we had amazing memories. I thank all those who made this day possible by joining us despite the bad weather to bond with all Assolnakars,” said Betty Rodrigues, who coordinated the event along with Jhofild D’Costa and Edwin Rodrigues.
