The latest semi-dangerous activity teens are sharing online revolves around banana peels.
Started by Twitter user Jason Oakes, the challenge is pretty much what you'd expect it to be. Since people in cartoons are always slipping on banana peels, Oakes decided to see if it can also happen in real life, so he tried stepping on one. At first, it's not too crazy. A few seconds later, he slips, yells, and tries (and fails) to save himself with a cup on a table. It was genuinely hilarious, and the tweet that was sent out on March 27 went viral “ it already has more than 94,000 "likes" and 90,000 retweets. What's unsurprising, however, is that teens and random people across Twitter are also participating in this challenge “ just slipping on banana peels for no reason“ because why not?The #IceBucketChallenge had a certain logic to it, right? People were using the viral meme to raise awareness about ALS research and pressuring their friends to join in by directly challenging them. They weren’t just dousing themselves with ice water to see if it’s actually cold and uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, Jason is doing the only reasonable thing he can do at this point and trying to score a ticket to the The Ellen Show. At least he’s pretty self-aware about how silly this whole thing is. "Hello to my new 500+ followers why the hell r u following me I'm boring and just fell on a banana one time" he later tweeted.
While teens around the country find the challenge hilarious, health experts are warning parents and all adults that this could lead to serious injuries. In some cases, it could lead to lifelong disabilities and death.
