TRIBUTE TO GLOBAL GOANS
In the vast tapestry of human communities that span the globe, one group stands out for their unwavering love and connection to their roots - the Goan community. This vibrant and tightly knit community has dispersed across the world, but their hearts remain firmly tied to their homeland, Goa. They have carved a special place for themselves in the hearts of people wherever they go.
Wherever the Goan community gathers, joy and celebration are sure to follow. They are renowned for their fun-loving nature, and their cultural events are always filled with music, song, and dance. These festivities are not just about entertainment; they are a way to honour their traditions and customs, as well as their talents, keeping them alive for generations to come. The melodies of Goa echo through the halls, and the vibrant colours of their traditional attire brighten up the atmosphere, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. A characteristic aspect of Goans when they come together, is that they transcend love and unity, and celebrate their inherent values.
Among the many countries that host a significant number of Goans around the world, North America stands out as one of the most prominent regions. Many cities in the USA and Canada have active Goan organisations that bring the community together and keep the spirit alive, apart from those in the UK and Australia, and in the Middle East as well.
Here, in the bustling city of Toronto, the Goan Overseas Association (G.O.A) has become a beacon of Goan culture and tradition. The G.O.A Toronto is a melting pot of Goans from various places, including Goa itself, Mumbai, the Middle East, East African countries like Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, Zanzibar, Mozambique, Angola, and some from Karachi. This diverse mix enriches their cultural tapestry, making them an even more vibrant and accepting community.
VIVA GOA 2023
The crown jewel of G.O.A’s repertoire of events is the much-awaited ‘Viva Goa 2023’ summer outing. This day-long extravaganza is a grand celebration of all things Goan. It commences with a Holy Mass at 10 am. From there on, the day is a whirlwind of joy, camaraderie, delectable food, soul-stirring music, popular Goan songs, captivating dance performances, a soccer (football) competition and children’s activities. The highlight of the event is the "Parade of the Villages of Goa," where participants proudly walk behind placards displaying the names of their respective villages in the background of music and song.
The venue for this splendid affair was the sprawling and picturesque Croatian Park in Milton, Ontario. It was the first time that this event was held at this location, and it was nothing short of a monumental success. An estimated 5,000 people, including families and friends, came together to revel in the celebration of their shared heritage. The meticulous planning and execution by the organising committee and volunteers ensured that every aspect of the event was seamless, making it a day to cherish.
One attendee, who experienced the morning session and was leaving while witnessing an endless stream of incoming vehicles, was filled with awe and admiration for the huge event. He shared, "As I drove towards the exit and then on to the intersection, I could see a very long line of incoming vehicles. Counting them just out of curiosity, I actually counted no less than 300 additional vehicles driving in – mostly full of families and friends."
Such overwhelming attendance is a testament to the deep sense of belonging and pride that Goans feel for their community.
The success of ‘Viva Goa 2023’ was no small feat, and credit must be given to the organisation’s visionary leadership and exemplary efforts of the G.O.A. Toronto committee. The event's size, the meticulous planning, a full day’s schedule of performers, some flown in, especially from Goa, the sound and digital connect, and the warm hospitality showcased the spirit of Goa, as revellers danced and rejoiced throughout the day and into the late hours. It left a lasting impression on all those who attended.
YOUTH INVOLVEMENT
A significant contributing factor to the success of G.O.A Toronto is the active involvement of the youth, born and raised in Canada. Guided by experienced members of the committee, these young individuals play a vital role in planning, owning, and organising the events. They consider it their responsibility to keep the spirit of Goa alive, not just to rekindle their parents' love of Goa but to ignite the flame in their own hearts and of Goans worldwide. Their passion, energy, and dedication infuse new life into their heritage, and cultural traditions, ensuring that they continue to flourish for generations to come.
The Goan community in Canada, as part of the country’s multi-cultural diversity, is an epitome of how cultural heritage can transcend geographical boundaries and bring people together. With their inclusive nature, love for traditions, and zeal for celebration, they have created a legacy that resonates around the world. As the Goan diaspora continues to grow and evolve, one thing remains constant—their unwavering connection to Goa and the cherished memories of being part of ‘Viva Goa 2023’ and other such spectacular events that bind them together.
In a world where globalisation sometimes dilutes cultural identities, the Goans proudly stand as an exception, exemplifying the beauty and richness of preserving one's roots while embracing the world. As they continue to thrive and celebrate their heritage, they inspire others to cherish and uphold their own cultural legacies, making the world a more harmonious and colourful place. Long live the spirit of Goa and may the Goans continue to shine like a beacon of unity and love across the globe!
