Goan culture and cuisine were presented at the State Foundation Day featuring Goa and six other states, which was hosted by the High Commission of India (HCI) at London on June 11.
Besides Goa, each of the other six states of Maharashtra, West Bengal, Gujarat, Telangana, Odisha and Sikkim showcased their respective culture and cuisine in the Gandhi Hall at the HCI.
The evening started with the singing of the ‘Vande Mataram’, followed by a short film on each of the seven states.
High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom H.E Kumaran Periasamy, was then welcomed to the function to the beats of ‘Dhol Tasha’ performed by the Maharashtra Mandal, UK. He then extended his welcome to the guests from seven states.
The evening showcased the rich diversity, vibrant cultures, and shared spirit that unite India.
At the HCI’s request, the Goan Overseas Association (GOA) UK, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, led the Goan community in representing Goa State.

In his address, Kumaran highlighted how each state contributes its unique thread to India’s rich tapestry and acknowledged the important role of the Indian diaspora, community organisations, and volunteers in preserving cultural heritage and strengthening connections across generations.
Praising Goa, Kumaran said: “Goa is known for its maritime heritage, cosmopolitan spirit and history, which gives it a special place in India.”
Minister of Coordination Deepak Choudhary and other staff of the HCI were also present on the occasion.
On behalf of the Indian community, Lord Uday Nagaraju thanked the High Commissioner for the celebration, stating, “Each of these states has its own unique history, language, and contribution to India. Together they represent the true spirit of our nation, unity and diversity which can only be found in India.”
After all states performed their cultural programmes, the gathering then proceeded to the Nehru Hall, where each state presented their cuisine. Goa’s presentation, organised by the GOA UK, had a wide spread of traditional delicacies, which included prawn rissois, chicken croquettes, fish cutlets, Goan chutney sandwiches and bebinca, which were well appreciated by the guests.
Besides the food, Goan artefacts, art, souvenirs and books, including two publications of the GOA UK’s anniversary souvenirs marking its 40th and 50th anniversaries, were also on display at the Goa desk, which was managed by Juliette De Menezes (GOA UK Vice-President), Chloe De Mendonca (Social and PR Director), Rosy D’Silva and other members of GOA UK.
Later while interacting with the Goan community, Choudhary lauded the GOA UK and the Goan community, adding that he was impressed with the GOA UK’s annual summer festival, which was well planned and executed. He said it was an honour to be associated with the Goan community.

When contacted, GOA UK President Ravi Vaz told The Goan that it was a matter of pride and privilege for Goa to be opening the cultural presentation.
“The GOA UK has been associated with the High Commission of India for many years, and we are now in our 60th anniversary. We will continue our relationship with the HCI,” said Ravi.
He praised the present Minister of Coordination, Deepak Choudhary, whose tenure at the HCI in London is coming to an end, for being very helpful and supportive to the GOA UK.
“During his tenure, he had been very cooperative in addressing various issues faced by the Goan community with the HCI. We sincerely thank Choudhary for his close relationship with the Goan community.”
Among the members of the Goan community present at the event were former Watford mayor and former GOA UK president Rabi Martins, Rene and Maria Barreto, Rosy D'Silva, and Christie Fernandes. Clayton Barreto was instrumental in getting the Goan community to showcase its culture and cuisine at the event.
When contacted, Rabi Martins said it was an honour and privilege to represent Goa along with members of GOA UK and the Goan community to celebrate the State Foundation Day at the HCI in London.
