From Swindon in the United Kingdom, a proud Goan is making her mark on the international stage. Valankie Fernandes, who moved from Goa to the UK at the age of nine, is now a finalist at the Miss Universe Great Britain 2026 pageant.

Speaking exclusively, Valankie says representing her culture on a global platform is both surreal and a privilege. “I’ve always carried my Goan identity loud and proud. To showcase it on stage means everything to me,” she shares.

Valankie, who is also a solicitor by profession, highlights that modern pageants go far beyond physical beauty.

“It’s not just about outward appearance — it’s about substance, stage presence, communication, and the impact we create through our work and values,” she explains.

She adds that many contestants are accomplished women in their own fields, reflecting the evolving role of women in society today.

Deeply rooted in her Goan upbringing, Valankie credits her cultural background for shaping her journey.

“I was born in Merces-Goa to my parents Viriato Fernandes and Maria Gonsalves. I’m the youngest with two big brothers Volney and Verney. My father owned a business - VAV Audio Visuals and my mother was a housewife and a really good one at that,” said Valankie.

“I lived with extended family with grandparents, aunties and uncles and loads of cousins so my childhood was very loud and colourful!”

“Growing up surrounded by Goan culture — the music, food, and talent — made me believe in my own potential,” she says.

She also speaks about the Susegad lifestyle, often misunderstood as being laid-back.

“For me, it’s about balance. As a lawyer, life can get intense, but this mindset helps me stay grounded and live fully beyond work,” she notes.

Reflecting on her journey from Goa to the UK, she admits the transition wasn’t easy.

“Adapting to a new culture at a young age was challenging, but it shaped me into who I am today,” she said.

“It was quite endearing to see my parents start from scratch in an unknown country and do it so effortlessly all for my siblings and me. It is also really nice to see how my siblings and I have taken every opportunity to build a sweet little life here in England and absorb the English culture whilst also maintaining our Goan culture.”

Valankie said she is proud to represent both Swindon and her Goan community.

Her message to the younger generation is clear and powerful: “Never be afraid of failure. It’s part of the journey. Once you accept that, success is never too far.”

With her eyes now set on winning Miss Universe Great Britain and potentially representing at the global stage in Puerto Rico, Valankie Fernandes continues to inspire — carrying Goa with her, every step of the way.
