LONDON
Angela Joyce De Souza is the first person from the Goan community in Brent-London to be chosen as a candidate of the Labour Party for the local Brent council elections, marking a significant milestone for representation of the community in the Borough of Brent.
A community advocate who has experience as a lawyer in Goa, Joyce announced her candidacy for councillor for the Wembley Hill Ward, pledging to tackle pressing local issues and champion inclusivity. The election is scheduled for May 7, 2026.
Claiming to have a wealth of experience in community work and law, Joyce said she is committed to addressing local issues/challenges, aiming to make Wembley Hill ward a thriving place for all residents.
“My goal is to ensure our ward is a place where everyone can thrive,” she stated.
Joyce, who serves as the Women Officer of the Labour Party for the Brent West Parliamentary Constituency Labour Party, said she is focused on promoting equality and empowering women in the community.
“As a woman officer, I'm committed to advancing opportunities for women and ensuring their voices are heard,” she emphasised.
“Let's work together to create a ward where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.”
Joyce also serves as a governor for a local NHS trust (CNWL) and an elected school governor of the Elsley School, Wembley.
“I am actively involved in organising community events that foster connections and celebrate local diversity, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Brent, which is home to diverse communities, including the Goan diaspora,” said Joyce.
Incidentally, Joyce’s husband, Elvis Fernandes, a former deputy sarpanch of Loliem-Polem panchayat in Canacona-Goa, is a delegate of the Constituency of the Labour Party (CLP), Brent West.
Elvis and Joyce are both active in social work and reach out to different communities, including the Goan community in in Wembley-London.
