LONDON
It was a special occasion for grandparents and children, as The Smiling Stars organised a free event for them in collaboration with former Swindon councillor Domingos Dias at the Broadgreen Community Hall in Swindon-UK on September 26 from 5 pm to 8 pm.
The event consisted of live music, dance performances, singing, games, spot prizes and a live band.
The programme began with a prayer, followed by the Children’s March and a dance for the children, with four spot prizes for best dancing and energy level. There was face painting and a handcraft sale.
A cake was cut, followed by the ‘Sorgar Rajeant’ song and the ‘Xamai Xapai’ song. Other performances included solo songs by Shanaya, a ‘Head Shoulder Cup’ game for children below 15 years, spot prizes, a Konkani dance by the Glowing Stars, a spot photo prize with a child and grandparent, and a dance performance by the Cosmic Dreamer Dance Group.
Other performances included a one-act play ‘The Friend’, a dance performance by the Groovy Stars Dance Group, a Pakka Zoom Trip Dance, games, Housie, dinner and a prize distribution.
During the event, the gathering observed a minute’s silence in tribute to late Fr Bolmax Pereira, a priest, professor, environmentalist, activist and educator.
In his address, Domingos Dias said the event was special, as two of the most beautiful generations were present in one room.
“On one side, we have our children — full of energy, innocence, dreams and laughter. And on the other side, we have our grandparents — full of love, wisdom, stories and blessings. Let us enjoy the performances and the smiles and celebrate this special bond of love between generations,” said Domingos.
“Grandparents are like the roots of a family tree. They hold us strong. Children are like the flowers and fruits of the same tree. They give us hope for the future. When roots and flowers come together, a family becomes complete.”
“This day reminds us of something very important. In today’s busy life, children learn from books and mobiles, but they learn values, culture, kindness and patience only from their grandparents. And grandparents find new energy and happiness when they are with their grandchildren.”
Domingos thanked the grandparents for their unconditional love, for their prayers, for their guidance, and for being the heart of families.
He advised children to love their grandparents, respect them, spend time with them, and listen to their stories.
“One day those stories will become your most precious memories,” he said.
Domingos expressed his gratitude to Acasio Fernandes and Lurdina Fernandes of The Smiling Stars for being instrumental for organising the event for the second year. He also thanked Emce Monica, who came from Southhall, and everyone who made the event possible.
