When love triumphs over evil designs and machinations, life is a worthwhile experience to live. Tiatr and tiatrists occupy a place of pride in the lives of Goans who have kept the flame of tiatr burning bright in the history of over 125 years since the first tiatr was staged. When a tiatr is written giving insights into the lives and hardships of tiatrists performing tiatr, the plot surely touches the hearts of tiatr afficianados and this is what Josevon attempts to do in the latest release titled Subject!

Script

The script has a great storyline but the writers have messed with the sequences unfolding the plot. The first half in particular is a bit lengthy with unwanted matter and sequences and that leads to boredom but the second half picks steam and makes up for what is lost in the first half. The climax scenes in particular takes a great ‘U turn’, giving the script a good depth. This is a tiatr script with comic overtures related to the main story. The cantos too are well composed and rightly introduced. The script would have however done better if the character of the wayword drunken brother was not introduced. Then, the tiatr script would run smoothly without diversion of thought and activity.

Comedy

Unlike the current trend of getting comedy not related to the main plot in the non stop drama

style, the tiatr has comedy linked to the plot. The comedians are new but manage to get a good response for their acts. The comedy is decent, simple and storyline oriented. It is not a collection of jokes as is normally seen.

Sets

The box sets are related to the storyline and reveal the financial status of those living in it. However the posh sets have no decent furniture. There was scope for better sets. Take for example the opening cemetery scene. If a real cemetery scene was depicted on the curtain the presentation would have had a greater opening. The blue curtain was used but to the minimal.

Acting : The tiatr features new-comers with Jose de Pedda probably being the only seasoned tiatrist who earlier acted for Prince Jacob and Minin de Bandar. Jose de Pedda and Meenakshi the new acting sensation make a great pair in the lead. Both display maturity in their portrayal. But it is Meenakshi who carves a niche of love in the audience with her superlative acting prowess. Luciano is the elder brother who gives a fine portrayal of his assertiveness as the elder brother in the family. Flacksy impresses in a negative role of the villain in the family. Arnaldo, as the humble father, is quite convincing. Anif portrays both the roles he play with aplomb! In the comedy section again new comedians are featured. Evon Stancio and in the comedy section were good. The teenager Stancio is a superb talent and a great find on tiatr stage. If nurtured with care and right direction, he surely has a great future ahead in tiatr.

Music/songs

The band led by the young Ajiton was good and impressive. The tiatr has a great opening chorus sung in style by the charming Simran, Flacksy and Stancio. Jr. Reagan’s solo on couples working in tiatrs is a great composition and the rendition too was flawless. Simran is the pick among the singers. Her melodious voice coupled with her charming personality and decent dressing style is the highlight of the tiatr presented on stage. There are other songs too by Anif, Joylan, Arnaldo, Jose-Evon, Jose-Luciano, Simran-Meenakshi and others that are well rendered.

Direction

The direction is great. Getting a performance of this caliber that too from relatively new faces on tiatr stage is indeed an achievement. All technical aspects like lights and background score toohelp in the enrichment of the characterization and consequently the performance on stage. A good performance to watch. A good entertainment; ‘divertiment’as it is called, is guaranteed.

In the supermarket, we get stuck in the aisles just trying to choose a brand, for example, of ice-cream. If we go to a coffee shop, we are bombarded by a number of questions as we place our order for coffee like, “Would you like it hot or cold?, Do you want sugar or cream in it? If cold, would like your ice,…
