Tiatr Mogi
Greed is the root cause of all evils. The desire to acquire more and more wealth makes a person trod on pathways that lead to a criminality. A father is the head of the family and has a primary responsibility to take care of the needs of the family.
But then, inorder to achieve the goals that he has set his eyes on, can the means he uses to achieve the end be justified? There are many such questions posed in the minds of the audience but to seek answers, watching the Dubai returned Michael Diniz’s tiatr ‘Zhadd’ will be a necessity.
Script
The script is fast paced and has interesting turns and twists. But this so called tiatr is presented in the non stop format with comedy line totally parallel to the main storyline. There are interesting cantos sung.
However the writer has not done his homework well before writing the script. One simple example: Can a woman marry another man when her husband is alive or without divorcing her previous husband? Is this legally permitted? Will the priest solemnize such marriage? There are many aspects too that require minute thinking and questioning. But some issues can pass off in the name of dramatic element!
Comedy
The comedy is in the non stop drama format with no relation to the main storyline. However due credit should be given to the writer for writing decent and well meaning comedy that can be viewed with the entire family. With the modern comedians or rather jokers hellbent on dishing out vulgar comedy, this tiatr reinforces the belief that all tiatrists are not vulgar and that there are people who value decency and yet laugh out loud at good comedy.
We recommend that the stage comedians view this tiatr and see for themselves how decent people react and laugh out at the good comedy. They will also learn from the living legends of comedy performing, how a good timing and play of words coupled with meaningful comic expressions can send the audience roaring with laughter.
Sets
There are some curtains and scenes that are tailor-made for this performance. The box set used revealed the financial status and background of the family dwelling in it. Comedy was performed on the blue curtain which could have been avoided bu utilizing the house curtain of the auditorium.
Acting
The tiatr Industry’s greatest artistes are featured in this tiatr and it is a treat to see them performing together. Roseferns was at his prime. Jessica was a perfect wife but she needs to control her sing song dialogue delivery that sounded artificial on many occasions. Anthony San tried to deliver but somehow got lost in his portrayal. Peter de Pedda was superb and very effective as a young and old priest too. Anil Pednekar plays his role with class and aplomb but it was definitely the show of Willy Silveira! His mannerisms, stage moves,modulated dialogue delivery and attractive stage personality were a treat to watch!
The comedy was rocked by the tiatr legends Prince Jacob, Humberto and John D’Silva. It was a treat to watch the two real brothers acting together, reminiscing the audience of their chemistry onstage a few years ago. John D’Silva didn’t have much but he excelled in what he did. Having such great legends performing together a relatively new female comedienne on stage would get goose bumps in her stomach. But Meena Goes with her natural acting, baby face expressions and perfect comedy timing stole the show with her brilliance. Watch her specially reacting for the word ‘Mai’! The otherwise main role actress definitely has a bright future ahead in comedy.
Music/songs
The band led by Anthony de Velim lacked punch. The blowing segment was particularly weak. Due to the weak (wrong?) blowing of the second blowing instrumentalist the lead appeared jittery. It was the rhythm of the keyboardist that saved the day. Most of the songs were solos.
Olga Vaz, Xavier Gomes, Cajetan de Sanvordem, Rosario de Benaulim, Baba Joshua, Marcus Vaz, Benny de Aldona dished out great solos.
Anil Olga sings a good duet but unfortunately it was an old duet sung a few years ago. Xavier Marcus and Benny sings a political trio that had an encore. With heavy weight singers in the list singing great compositions the tiatr reached a good height. But there was this young girl Nerissa Cardozo, who was the cynosure of all eyes as she dished the opening Chorus. Her sweet voice and modulations gave the tiatr a great start after a lackluster opening scene. When she came back again to sing her solo on suicide her voice was once again appealing. Nerissa is surely a talent for tomorrow!
Direction
The direction was sleek and simple. With a star cast lined up the performance guaranteed an applause. The technical side complimented the artistes on stage and James provided great background music, but the volume could be reduced a bit. A good performance to watch.
