MARGAO
In a proactive step toward promoting sustainable village-level waste management, Velim MLA Cruz Silva led a delegation comprising Sarpanchas, Panchayat members, Deputy Director of Panchayats, BDO and Panchayat Secretaries to the Wealth Out of Waste (WOOW) treatment facility at Chicalim.
The visit aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the scientific waste treatment protocols implemented to manage waste generated within the Chicalim Village Panchayat and neighbouring jurisdictions. Project CEO Gaurav Pokle provided an in-depth presentation on the operational framework of the facility, emphasising key processes involved in waste segregation, treatment, and reuse. He further noted that the treated water from the plant is being utilised to maintain the nearby Joggers Park—an initiative that reinforces the importance of water conservation and circular resource use.
The site visit was followed by an in-depth interaction session at the Chicalim Panchayat Hall, where all constructive dialogue on replicating similar models across their village panchayats.
“The purpose of this visit was to raise awareness and demonstrate that waste treatment facilities can be clean, efficient, and free of odour. Many people oppose garbage plants due to concerns about foul smells and public nuisance, but the facility at Chicalim stands as a shining exception. I am prepared to organise more such visits in the future to further educate and reassure our citizens about sustainable waste management”, Cruz said.
