Talk ‘Embroideries as texts’ at Sunaparanta today

PANAJI: A talk by artist Afrah Shafiq on ‘Embroideries as Texts/Research as Play’ will be held at Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts on June 12 at 6:30 pm. Afrah, a recipient of the V M Salgaocar Fellowship Grant, researched Slavic folk embroidery, focusing on its close ties to marriage. In her multimedia presentation, Afrah will share excerpts from her research on women’s embroideries from the Slavic tradition, their connections to women’s inner lives, and the process of translating these findings into a video game about a bride who could not stop crying.

Afrah’s work, ‘The Bride Who Could Not Stop Crying’, is currently showcased as part of the ongoing V M Salgaocar Fellowship & Emerging Grants 2022 exhibition. The work offers players a unique narrative experience where choices determine the protagonist’s emotional journey, prompting reflections on the complexities of family relationships and cultural expectations. The exhibition will remain open until June 12, 2024.
