The popular folk art form in Goa, Dashavatari plays, that are staged in the villages from March onwards every year, are at a halt now amid the pandemic. These Dashavatari plays have special audiences that attend these live performances in the villages, but this year they were disappointed. For these enthusiastic theatre art lovers, the artists in Dashavatari plays from Sattari and Bicholim have joined hands and completed the recording of two Dashavatari plays which they plan to stream through YouTube soon.
The two plays “ Suyoghan Sarpadansh and Revannath “ are video recorded at Hanuman temple at Dhave, Nagargaon. There is a large network of Dashavatari viewers in North Goa but due to the Covid-19 crisis, plays cannot be staged in the temple complexes with the audience. Due to the full-stop on the live performances, the Dashavatari theatre artists are facing a financial crisis. “To preserve this folk art for posterity, the villages and temple committees have supported the staging and recording of the two plays, so that they can be viewed by the public on YouTube channel “ Kaleche Aamhi Poojak,” stated Damodar Joshi, a senior theatre artist.
