Patricia Pinto, Panjim’s Florence Nightingale who nursed her town to rid it of its garbage scientifically has given up. Co-opted corporator of the CCP, Patricia Pinto who had single handedly steered a permanent solution to Panjim’s garbage woes has resigned from her position on Tuesday.
Mayor of the corporation, Vaidheyi Naikand Commissioner Sanjit Rodgrigues has confirmed that Ms. Pinto has resigned aftershe served for CCP 17 months.
Vaidehi Naik, Mayor of CCP said that sheis unaware about the reason why Ms. Pinto has resigned suddenly, whereas, Pintowhen contacted refused to comment saying “I don’t want to make my resignationan issue”
However The Goan has learnt that a deeply hurt Pinto took umbrage afterreports in a section of the media, that the government had planned to set uptwo mixed waste plans in north and South Goa while discarding the plant thatBanguinim. In her letter of resignation to the CCP Commissioner Ms Pinto hasdetailed her involvement and the steps taken by the Waste Management Cell she setup as the co-opted councilor to develop the culture of segregation.
She elaborated on how the BanguinimWaste management plant was planned specifically to treat segregated waste andthe step to set up a mixed waste management plant was “regressive” and a stepback.
The main cause of her resignationhowever was in not being taken into confidence by the CCP before the decisionto find start two mixed waste plants was announced in the assembly by the ChiefMinister
On July 26, Chief MinisterParrikar stated that identification of a new location for treatment plant wasnecessary as land acquired at Bainguinim is unfeasible for the purpose.
Kabir Pinto Makhija,Corporator “I will request her to re- considere her decision in interest ofPanjim and state. She has been working on finding a long term solution togarbage problem. He further said HC haddirected the CCP to start the bainguinim plant and now government had to answerthe high court.
When asked about governmentstand on Bainguinim Sachin Ambe, Corporation Engineer said that they are stillworking on Bainguinim plant, as “we have not received any communication fromgovernment” he mentioned.
Cumharjua MLA PandurangMadkaikar has been opposing the Baiginim since beginning has said that shecannot pressurize the government, as per norms every Panchayat or Municipalbodies has to identify a land in their own jurisdiction not in other villages.
