Director of Health Services, Dr Ira Almeida has said the government in association with YouWeCan Foundation has launched an ambitious program to screen around one lakh women for breast cancer in two years. Dr Ira Almeida flagged of the Ride for Cancer bike rally from the South Goa district hospital organised by YouWeCan Foundation in association with SBI Foundation and Indian Institute of Banking & Finance. Speaking to The Goan, Dr Almeida said the Directorate of Health Services plan to scan one lakh women in two years in the state. ‘Breast cancer is a matter of concern. Being a developing state, Goa has done well on the health front. But, breast cancer is one of the life style disease affecting the women in the state”, she said In her address, Hospicio South Goa district Hospital, Medical Superintendent Dr Deepa Corriea said one need not be symptomatic to undergo screening for breast cancer. Dr Corriea pointed out that screening facility has been set up at the district hospital, even as she made an impassioned plea to the womenfolk to visit the hospital and undergo the test. The bike rally, which was flagged off at the South Goa District Hospital drove around in South Goa before culminating at the hospital. Those present on the occasion, included Naven Kumar Gupta, deputy general manager, SBI, Dr Kedar Raikar, nodal officer, DHS, Dr T Lotlikar, Healh officer, Cortalim and Dr M Verlekar, attached to Hospicio district hospital, South Goa.
