Study finds gaps in inclusivity for students with disabilities in higher education institutions in Goa and Maharashtra

PANAJI: A study by VM Salgaocar College of Law faculty has found that despite improvements in basic facilities for students with disabilities (SWDs) in higher education institutions in Goa and Maharashtra, significant gaps remain in usability, maintenance and personalised support.

The research, titled ‘Enhancing Inclusivity and Accessible Friendly Environment for Students with Disabilities: A Case Study of Higher Educational Institutions in Goa & Maharashtra’, was conducted by college counsellor Trisha J. Almeida and librarian Nalin C. Phaldesai. It was published in the ‘Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Journal of Disability Studies & Research’ (June 2025).

Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combined data from institutions with interviews of SWDs to assess not only infrastructure but also the effectiveness of support systems.

While many colleges have installed ramps, accessible washrooms and assistive technologies, the report points to attitudinal barriers, lack of sensitisation and social isolation as key challenges.

The authors have called for a holistic approach that goes beyond statutory compliance, urging continuous faculty training, proactive outreach and stronger academic and social engagement with SWDs. They said such steps are essential to create truly inclusive campuses and help students reach their full potential.
