In a third major seizure of alcohol in about a month, a Pernem excise team seized alcohol worth Rs 7.21 lakh which was illegally being transported to Miraj via Patradevi in the wee hours of Saturday.
According to reports, the incident took place at about 3.30 am when the truck arriving from Mapusa reached the Patradevi border check post and the driver informed the excise team that the cargo contains groceries.
Suspicious about his claims, the officials checked the vehicle and found groceries as well as 249 boxes of branded alcohol bottles.
The excise team led by Mohandas Govekar seized the alcohol valued at Rs 7.21 lakh along with the truck. However, the truck driver escaped from the scene while the inspection was in progress.
Excise official Mohandas Govekar and his team comprising Vibhuti Shetye, Amol Harvalekar, Shamba Parab, Siddhesh Haldankar, Swapnesh Naik and Suraj Gaude took part in the seizure.
This is the third major seizure after excise department had seized alcohol worth Rs 8 lakh and Rs 17 lakh on September 8 and September 23 respectively.
