BITS Pilani professor wins Goa Rajya Vidnyanik Puraskar

Prof Srikanth Mutnuri from the department of Biological Sciences at BITS Pilani, Goa was awarded with the prestigious Goa Rajya Vidnyanik Puraskar under the ‘Environment’ category for his applied research on decentralised wastewater treatment systems. His ground-breaking innovations, the vertical flow constructed wetlands and the electrochemical disinfection system, are pivotal in progressing towards Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean water and sanitation) and supporting the Swachh Bharat Mission. Complementing the VFCW system is Prof Mutnuri's electrochemical disinfection system, a groundbreaking advancement in water purification technology. This innovative system generates disinfectants in situ through an electrochemical process, ensuring the effective elimination of pathogens and providing safe drinking water. The effectiveness of this system has been demonstrated in various public locations, including Bogmalo beach, Cujira school complex, Madgaon wholesale fish market, and an open Nallah in Hubli.

Man arrested with drugs worth Rs 1.9 Lakh

MARGAO: Margao Police have arrested a Margao resident for allegedly possessing around 1,090 grams of greenish leafy and flowery substance suspected to be ganja.  The seized drug is valued at approximately Rs 1.9 lakh.  Police said the accused, Rohit Pandrekar, was caught red-handed behind the Sulabh toilet on Old Station Road, Malbhat. He was arrested under Section 20(b)(ii)(B) of the NDPS Act, 1985.
