Francisco D’Souza has been elected unopposed as the new chairman of the Vasco Carnival Committee 2024.
The elections were conducted at the first meeting of the Vasco Carnival Committee in Vasco on Thursday evening in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council MMC Chairperson Girish Borker.
Other committee members elected were Liby Mendonca, Suyog Fernandes, Lavina D’Souza and Cosme Mendes (Vice Presidents), Peter Correia (Secretary) and Fiola Rego (treasurer).
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Francisco D’Souza said there would be different programmes at the carnival.
“We will have mostly Goan cultural programmes, but we will have another meeting where the committee can suggest the different programs for the Vasco Carnival this year,” said D’Souza.
Fiola Rego said Konkani programmes will be promoted instead of Bollywood. “We are only hoping that the code of conduct is not applied during Carnival considering the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In case of a code of conduct, this committee will be null and void and if the code is not applied, we will work very hard and extend all our support to have a different kind of Carnival in Vasco this year,” said Rego. Liby Mendonca and Peter Correia also spoke on the occasion.
