The inaugural of the Ruby Jubilee of the inception of the Department of Microbiology, St. Xavier’s College Mapusa Goa was held on October 11. It began with Head of Department Ursula Barreto escorting the dignitaries to the dais including the Chief Guest Prof Savita Kerkar, Guest of Honor Marina Monteiro, Principal Prof Blanche Mascarenhas, Administrator of St Xavier’s College, Fr Antonio Salema and Vice Principal Sandra Fernandes.
The dignitaries symbolically inaugurated the Ruby Jubilee celebrations with the watering of a plant. The sincere service put in by the late Prof Irene Furtado, who was with the Department at the time of its inception, was acknowledged and a minute’s silence was observed as a remembrance tribute.
Administrator Rev Fr Tony Salema appreciated the efforts of the Department of Microbiology and congratulated them on this significant milestone of 40 years.
The inaugural was the prelude and used to kick start a Lecture series: “Life Sciences and Nature” in collaboration with departments of Biotechnology and Environmental Studies.
