Talking about enjoying everything in moderation, and of being at peace with oneself, Dr Mickey Mehta, speaking on the second day of the DD Kosambi Festival of Ideas at Kala Academy, asked the audience how many from amongst them went out and enjoyed the sunset in Goa.

A show of hands told Dr Mehta that hardly anyone did, to which he responded with “not even 10%!”, and immediately coaxed the audience to do so more often, adding, “You are in the land of happiness and harmony. People from all over the world come here to watch the sunsets.”

The fitness guru, who encouraged the youngsters present to live a life of self-discipline, spoke of the importance of fitness to achieve anything in life.

“Play a lot. Dance. Swim. Go outside the room. That is where you will gain a lot of productivity. Depressed people are those who don’t flow. You eat well and work out, you will flow,” he said, referring to being at peace with oneself in order to reach one’s full potential.

Mehta, who is a holistic guru and a corporate life coach based in Mumbai, also encouraged youngsters to think outside the box, and inspired them to become leaders, saying that each one of them was capable of being a leader when s/he grew up.

Speaking of his own experience, he said, “When I was in school, I would listen to others giving inspirational life talks and I always told myself that someday I would be on stage imparting my knowledge and experience.”

His words were followed by a resounding applause from the audience.

He also stressed on the importance of taking the time out to simply “be”, because he said, inspiration comes in moments of stillness.

Citing the example of the Buddha, he said, “Buddha became a Buddha when he was doing nothing.” Mehta also highlighted the importance of rest, and of sleeping early. “We are paranoid humans, always stressed and strained, being tossed around by life. We need to rest for at least eight hours a day,” he said, encouraging those present to give their smart devices a break.

While interacting with the audience, who threw a question at him about how the less-privileged could be happy if they were stamped upon by those with means, Mehta said, “They can’t take away your happiness. Or a good night’s sleep.”

He concluded by singing the King of Pop’s ‘Man in the Mirror’. “If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make that change.”.

The talk was compered by lecturer of English at Carmel College, Roxana Singh.
