The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday convened a special meeting with prominent citizens for the Centenary Celebration of the Mormugao Municipal Council “Camara de Mormugao” to be held from February 9 to 15.
Various citizen committees were formed at the meeting to chalk out various programmes for the celebrations.
The meeting was attended by many prominent citizens and was taken up by MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar and MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes along with other MMC Councillors.
Eight different types of committees and standing committees were appointed in the meeting including Publicity Committee, Entertainment Committee, Refreshments Committee, Fund Raising Committee, Souvenirs Committee, Felicitation Committee, Programmes Committee, Safety Committee and Organising Committee .
Speaking to media after the meeting, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said that a special meeting with prominent citizens had been convened to get the citizens involved and to listen to their proposals so as to make the centenary celebrations a grand success.
“This is a landmark function of MMC as it is celebrating 100 years of Camara de Mormugao established in year 1919. We want to ensure that the event is a grand success besides which we also want to involve citizens in the celebrations. We are sure that this celebration is such that it will be remembered by everyone for long,.” said Fernandes.
MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar said the function will be an eight-day event and various committees were appointed, while the council had also taken suggestions and views from public.
“Though the main centenary celebrations would last eight days, the MMC has decided to do something different and celebrate the centenary throughout out the year. We will have special events going on all round the year.”
“We will also take up lots of development works as a part of the centenary celebrations,” said Gaonkar.
Adv Savio Correia said it was necessary to have a concept for the purpose of the centenary celebrations.
“The purpose should be to increase bonding, unity and love among citizens and also to inculcate the same in the younger generation to make them feel a sense of belonging towards the city. MMC must involve school and college students and youth in the celebrations,” said Correia.
MMC Councillor Lavina D’souza said as part of the centenary celebrations, development works like state-of-art toilet and washroom facilities in both MMC Gardens, resolving of parking issues by introducing pay parking on certain streets and construction of a party hall with a capacity of 400 people should be taken up as a part of development.
