Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat on Sunday made a strong pitch for a home for special children to take care of their needs and requirements when they grow in age, even as he promised to raise the issue in the Legislative Assembly for additional incentives for institutions taking care of such kids.
He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the “Geet Ramayan” where special children staged a culturalprogramme organised by Lokvishwas Pratisthan, Dhavali-Ponda at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, on Sunday.
Impressed by a Rajasthan-based NGO, which is taking care of the special children in their old age, Kamat said a similar institute or home in the state should be set up in the State, either by the government or with its support.
Such a home will go a long way in meeting the future requirements of special children, he added.
“When I was watching Amitabh Bachan’s KBC programme, I was very touched by the activities of the Rajasthan-based NGO which has committed itself to the cause of special children even during their old age. In many cases, there’s no one around to look after the these children when they grow up. NGO has in its home various activities for the special children when they grow up in age.”
He complimented the institutions involved in imparting education and other activities for special children in Goa.
“During my tenure as CM, I had helped the Gujarati Samaj Educational Trust to acquire land for expansion of its institute. Today, the Trust has built a spacious complex which takes care of the overall requirements of the special children,” Kamat said, while promising to raise the need for additional incentives to all schools and institutions taking care of special children.
“Irrespective of political affiliations, I believe that parties and MLAs should come together to help and serve the cause of the special children.”
