MARGAO
Elections maybe two years away, but Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat has embarked on a door-to-door campaign in his home constituency Margao, which he has been representing for the last 25 years in the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Accompanied by his dedicated band of workers and ward councillors, Kamat has been found moving in the areas located on the southern side of the railway tracks comprising areas such as Khareband, Sirvodem, Chinchal and Azad Nagar.
While the door-to-door campaign has thrown up questions about the exact objective behind the exercise, Kamat has said that it was neither with an eye on the coming municipal polls nor an exercise aimed at interacting with the people before switching sides.
“It has been my practice over the years to interact with my constituents mid-way through the term. Since it will be three years now of the current term, I have decided to go back to my people and obtain inputs on the number of works completed and pending in their respective areas,” he said.
The six-time Margao MLA sought to rubbish reports that the exercise is aimed at gauging the sentiments of the people before he takes any decision on his political future.
“These opponents of mine have not lost a single opportunity to spread falsehood and lies that I will quit Congress. And, they must have been active again after my campaign in my constituency,” he said, while rubbishing the reports.
He further pointed out that the municipal elections are at least 10 months away and the current exercise has nothing to do with it.
During his visit to the ward represented by councillor Manoj Masurkar, the Margao MLA took the opportunity to convince the residents to take the sewerage connections.
He said the government is working on a scheme wherein sewerage connections will be given by the PWD and the cost will be recovered by it through water bills over a period of time.
