The Congress party has also not floated any panel for the panchayat elections, but both Gaonkar and Phaldessai are confident that the results would be in their favour.
As many as 191 candidates will contest elections to 53 wards in seven panchayats in Sanguem taluka, with most candidates in Rivona (33), followed by Sanvordem (29), Uguem (27), Vadem-Curdi (25), Bhati (21), Kalay (20) and Neturlim (15).
The candidates have already started their election campaigns with door-to-door visits in their wards. Many have been seeking the support of Gaonkar and Phaldessai.
Asked if he had floated any panel, Gaonkar replied in the negative. “All candidates from Sanguem constituency are my supporters. They have good relations with me and are contesting the panchayat elections. Supporting any one person will make others unhappy and hence, I have decided not to float any panel.”
“Whoever wins the panchayat elections in Sanguem constituency will be backed by me. I am sure the panchayat election results will be in my favour,” said the Sanguem MLA.
When contacted, former Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai said he too had not floated any panel for the panchayat elections, but said he has candidates who worked for the BJP.
When asked why had he not formed any panel, Phaldessai replied: “There are multiple candidates of the BJP contesting the panchayat elections in some wards, making it difficult for me to support any one candidate.” “I am guiding many supporters who are contesting the panchayat elections and I am confident that my candidates will win in all seven panchayats,” said Phaldessai.
