The introduction of ‘value education’ was aimed at inculcating moral values among primary children.
Speaking to The Goan Everyday, Goa Education Development Corporation (GEDC) Chairman Shripad Patnekar said, “After introducing the programme in nearly 200 government-run primary schools from last year, we realised that there was a positive outcome in the behaviour and learning outcomes of the students. Last month we had a meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar regarding the scheme and he was of the opinion that ‘value education’ should be introduced in all government primary schools if it has a positive impact on the students.”
“From this year onwards, we want to adopt the ‘whole-school approach’ wherein we want create awareness on ‘value education’ among parents and school managing committees, among others”, informed Patnekar.
Nonetheless, taluka-wise training of ADEIs and block resource persons (BRPs) will be held this month without hampering the functioning of the school.
Last year, two periods every week were allotted for value education. The syllabus has been designed by Shantilal Muttha Foundation (SMF), Pune, which has developed Mulyavardhan, a value education programme for adoption and adaptation by schools and school systems in India, which is approved by NCERT. Nonetheless, the SMF is doing all these activities free of cost for the State government.
The programme is in consonance with Indian Constitution, National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 and also Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE Act) 2009. Additionally, the school is not required to allot additional financial or human resources for implementation of the programme.
