MARGAO
A delegation representing mining-affected people from South Goa called on South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha at his Curtorim residence and urged him to take up their cause before the Centre for resumption of the activity.
After giving the delegation a patient hearing, Sardinha assured he would take up the matter with the Union Minister for Mines during his visit to Delhi. “I will try to meet the Union Mines Minister in the next three days. As far as meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi is concerned, it may not be possible since he is most of the time out of Delhi,” he told the delegation and reminded that the PM had taken three months to give an appointment in the past.
The delegation pointed out that the stoppage of mining has resulted in widespread socio-economic impact on the people dependent on mining, including permanent and temporary employees, truck owners and barge industry.
The delegation told the MP that he is well aware of the hardships faced by the mining dependents in the last 15 months, pointing out that many have lost their jobs and people were on the verge of losing their houses.
