MARGAO
In a shocking incident, a three-year-old girl was found abandoned at Margao’s busy and congested Gandhi market on Saturday. The girl was later sent for medical examination and will be sent to the Apna Ghar.
Women’s rights activist Auda Viegas has demanded that the Margao police conduct a detailed probe into the episode, recalling a past incident wherein an attempt was made by a mother of a child to sell her child for adoption at the Margao railway station.
Sub-divisional Police officer, Margao DySP Santosh Desai informed that the three-year-old will be sent to the Apna Ghar after a medical examination. Asked on the future course of action by the police, the DySP informed that the police would lodge an FIR against the unknown parents for abandoning their child at the Gandhi market. “The police would definitely register an FIR against unknown persons, including parents for abandoning the girl in the marketplace,” he said.
Addressing the media, Viegas said the girl cannot provide the details concerning her place of origin, saying, “She only says mama and papa”.
Expressing concern that Goa is fast becoming a place to abandon children, Viegas said the police need to find out how the victim girl reached the Gandhi market.
“The police need to find out whether the girl was brought to Goa for adoption and how she reached the Gandhi market,” she said, adding “Goa is not a place for outsiders to come here and abandon their children and murder their wives."
